These trips are a popular feature of our programme. In 2017, six one-day tours will be offered, not necessarily visiting a National Trust property. Travel is normally by an 'executive' standard coach operated by Chandlers of Westbury. The tours are also publicised in the February Newsletter, which contains details of the tour, the pick-up points and a booking form for each trip. These tours are open to all current National Trust members but priority is initially given to members of NWWNTA.

In the past, we have visited Covent Garden and a tour of the BBC, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, Chavenage House and Newark Park(NT), Kingston Lacy(NT) and Didcot Steam Centre and Greys Court(NT) to name but a few. There are usually four or five pick up points chosen from Chippenham, Devizes, Melksham, Holt, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge and Westbury.

Day Tour 7    Tues 5 Sept 2017             Abergavenny Market and Kentchurch Court / Gardens

On this trip, we are travelling to the Welsh Border Counties of Monmouth and Herefordshire. After our pick ups we take the M4 Motorway across the Severn Bridge, stopping for a short coffee break, arriving at the attractive town  of Abergavenny where it is market day.

We are allowing two hours to explore the indoor market and have a leisurely lunch in one of the many eating-places that the town boasts.

In the afternoon we drive the short distance to Kentchurch Court, which is just over  the Welsh border in Herefordshire. This property has been the home of the Scudamore`s since the 11th Century, with John Nash modernising the house in 1795,which was completed in 1825.

We will enjoy a conducted tour of the house seeing portraits by Sir William Lely and Thomas Lawrence together with the largest collection of Grinning Gibbon carvings in private ownership. We are assured there will be ample seats to rest during this tour  which will take 60 minutes or so.

The 25 acre gardens, which will be available to us for an optional charge of £5.00,  (payable on the day), consist of  a walled garden, rhododendron wood and  vegetable garden. Additionally 250 fallow deer wander freely around the deer park, which has been in existence since 1547.

The tea room is situated in the stables and offers tea, home made cakes and Ice Cream, not included in the cost. Seating available. Plants are available for purchase.
